James Moncrieff

James graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an Upper Second class LLB with Honours in 2008 before completing the Diploma in Legal Practice at the same institution.

He trained as a solicitor with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, working in specialised departments at Crown office in Edinburgh, before personally prosecuting cases in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy Sheriff Courts.

He started work as a Criminal Defence solicitor with Basten Sneddon upon the conclusion of his traineeship. He has been with the firm since and now has over 10 years’ experience in either prosecution or defending crimes.

James has amassed a large amount of experience in criminal courts all over the country, travelling as far as Lerwick Sheriff Court in Shetland to defend a client. He has represented clients in many serious and complex cases in both the High Court and Sheriff and Jury

In his early career as both a prosecutor and defence solicitor, James dealt with a large number of road traffic cases, which is something he continues to deal with to this day. Because of his knowledge and  expertise in this area, many clients have retained their licences, when otherwise they may have lost them.

James prides himself on making sure his cases are prepared to a high standard to ensure the best possible result. He is a determined and tenacious advocate and ensures his clients’ get the best possible representation and results.
